Geography

Deep Into the UNESCO Biosphere

The Vézère river opens up here into a grand landscape. Starting from Le Moustier, you will navigate through a corridor of white limestone and lush greenery. This 25 km section is remarkably preserved, offering a sense of total solitude where the only sounds are the rhythmic dip of your paddle and the calls of local birdlife. The river remains accessible (Class 1), but its length requires good physical stamina for a rewarding 4h45 journey.

History

Paddling Past 400,000 Years of Human Life

This circuit offers a front-row seat to the origins of our species. From your canoe, you will admire the towering cliff of La Roque Saint-Christophe, the largest troglodyte fort in Europe, and the world-renowned Le Moustier site, which gave its name to an entire prehistoric era (the Mousterian). You are navigating the same waters that sheltered our ancestors for thousands of years in this protected sanctuary.
