River: Dordogne – Moderate / Full Day Experience.
Experience Category: UNESCO Biosphere, River Heritage, Wildlife Discovery.

Leave the world behind and immerse yourself in the majestic landscapes of the “River of Hope.” This 22 km route starting from the historic village of Saint-Cyprien offers a perfect blend of exercise and deep relaxation. Navigate through a luminous valley where the sky opens up and the water’s clarity reveals the secret life of the riverbed.

Geography

The Grandeur of the UNESCO Biosphere Reserve

On this stretch, the Dordogne river reveals its most generous face. Navigating from Saint-Cyprien, you will experience the “luminous river” as it broadens significantly compared to its upstream sections. The current is steady and helpful (Class 1), but the scale of the landscape is what truly impresses. You will drift past large islands of white pebbles and beneath high limestone walls that serve as a sanctuary for diverse biodiversity, including the rare peregrine falcon.

History

Drifting Down the Ancient River Trade Route

The valley between Saint-Cyprien and Bac de Sors is steeped in the history of the “Gabarriers.” For centuries, these traditional flat-bottomed boats were the lifeblood of the Périgord, transporting salt, wine, and wood towards the Atlantic. By paddling this route, you follow this ancestral commercial path. Your arrival point at Bac de Sors is a major historical landmark—a former crossing point where life was once organized around the river’s flow and the ferry (bac) that linked the villages.
