Experience the most iconic river route in Europe. This 28 km expedition takes you from the foot of the vertiginous Beynac fortress through a living history book. Glide past medieval strongholds that have guarded the Dordogne for centuries, all while surrounded by the luminous beauty of a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve.
Geography
Sailing Through a UNESCO Biosphere
The Dordogne is a “wide and luminous” river, offering a sense of total freedom. On this 28 km stretch, you will navigate through the heart of its most prestigious section. The current is rhythmic (Class 1), aiding your progress as you cross vast horizons lined with white limestone cliffs and large pebble beaches. The clarity of the water allows you to observe a preserved ecosystem where the flight of the peregrine falcon often marks the transition between each castle.
History
The Epicenter of the Hundred Years’ War
By paddling from Beynac, you are entering a historical battlefield. From your canoe, you can witness the ancient rivalry between the English stronghold of Castelnaud and the French fortress of Beynac. These limestone giants have watched over the river for a millennium. You will also glide past Fayrac and the elegant Château des Milandes, once the home of Josephine Baker, following the same waters where traditional “Gabarres” once transported the treasures of the Périgord.
Interests
A Movie Set Experience Under the Sun

FAQs
Is the 28 km route too physical for families?
While the river is very easy (Class 1), the distance requires about 5 hours of paddling. We recommend this route for active families with children who are already comfortable on the water or for those who want a full day of exercise combined with world-class sightseeing.
Where should we park and how does the shuttle work?
Our main base is located in Le Bugue (Les Courrèges). You can park there for free in our private shaded parking. We will take you by shuttle to the starting point in Beynac. After your 28 km trip, our shuttle will pick you up at Le Buisson to bring you back safely to your car.
Can we Can we stop at the castles along the way?
You can certainly pull your canoe onto the banks at Beynac or Castelnaud to visit the villages. However, keep an eye on the time! To complete the full 28 km descent and return before the final shuttle, we recommend focusing on the water-level views and reserving castle tours for another day.
